Tutorial Thursday: Creating APA Style CENTRAL Accounts

It’s Tutorial Thursday! In this series, we explore APA’s library of video tutorials available on the PsycINFO YouTube channel and the APA Style CENTRAL® YouTube channel. Please feel free to link to or embed our videos in your library websites or LibGuides, course management systems, or other locations where students, faculty, and researchers will find them.

For today’s edition of Tutorial Thursday, we’d like to highlight a video on our APA Style CENTRAL YouTube channel: Creating APA Style CENTRAL Accounts.

Although you don’t need a personal account to access the APA Style CENTRAL quick guides, tutorials, self quizzes, and sample references and papers, you do need to be logged into your account to create and save references, and write papers.

This short tutorial provides an overview of how to create an APA Style CENTRAL account, including:

  • Using your existing APA account associated with your APA membership, MyPsycNET account, or MyAPA account;
  • Looking up an existing APA account with your email address; and
  • Creating a new APA Style CENTRAL account.

Please feel free to link to this tutorial in any location where students, faculty, and researchers will find it!

APA Training Events at ALA Annual

2017 ALA Annual Logo The American Library Association Annual Conference & Exhibition will be held at the McCormick Place Convention Center in Chicago, IL, from June 22-27, 2017. APA will be exhibiting at booth 4425. We will be offering a Lunch & Learn on APA Style CENTRAL® and the APA Databases on Monday, June 26.

We are also holding an informal user group meeting for those that have adopted APA Style CENTRAL on their campus. Those with subscriptions or trials are welcome to attend. Please contact support@apastylecentral.org for more information.

This year’s session will include an overview of using APA Style CENTRAL® to help students and faculty produce papers and manuscripts in APA Style®. Live search demos of APA Databases will review updates to PsycTHERAPY®, and we will take a closer look at the abstract field in PsycINFO®.
Walk-ins are always welcome, but priority will be given to participants who register in advance. Be sure to RSVP if you plan to attend.

APA Announces Spring 2017 Recipient of the Librarian Conference Travel Award

We are pleased to announce that Rachael Elrod, Head of the Education Library and Assistant University Librarian at the University of Florida’s George A. Smathers Libraries in Gainsville, FL, is the latest recipient of the APA Librarian Conference Travel Award. Rachel will use the funds to defray the cost of attendance at the American Library Association (ALA) Annual Conference 2017 in June.

Rachael will be presenting on behalf of a grant-funded research team at the ALA’s Library Instruction Round Table (LIRT) preconference called Examining and Supporting Student Transitions Across the Library Spectrum. Grant recipients seek to understand how students identify and select credible digital resources to support their scientific research. Rachael is looking forward to her first opportunity to address a national audience at ALA about this important topic.

The committee would like to thank all those who took time to apply – we received applications from librarians in a wide variety of institutions and positions. The applicant pool is always strong, and the committee encourages past applicants to apply again when they are next in need of conference funding.

Now through July 31, 2017, the APA Librarian Conference Travel Award is accepting applications for conferences taking place from September to December 2017. Please see the website for more details on eligibility, deadlines, and application materials.

We recently updated one of our most-viewed videos: How to Format a Citation in APA Style® on EBSCOhost.

This brief video demonstrates how to export APA Style citations from PsycINFO® (or any other database) on the EBSCOhost platform.

This is a great resource to link from a LibGuide or course module for any class working with APA Databases on EBSCOhost, and can be helpful in answering email or chat reference questions. The previous version of this tutorial will remain available, but if you have embedded or linked to it anywhere, we encourage you to update your materials to link to this new version.
