New Handbook: APA Handbook of Psychopharmacology

The APA Handbooks in Psychology series was launched in 2011 to provide comprehensive overviews and in-depth study of specific subfields within psychology. All of the Handbooks are included in the PsycBOOKS® database, and titles are also available individually.

The series currently contains 30 authoritative titles, including the 2014 CHOICE Outstanding Academic Title, APA Handbook of Sexuality and Psychology.

The most recent addition to this series is the APA Handbook of Psychopharmacology, edited by Suzette M. Evans and published in April 2019.

This handbook provides a comprehensive working knowledge of basic pharmacology and psychopharmacology, examines the utility of pharmacotherapy for addressing different dimensions of human suffering, and highlights the broader professional and social issues surrounding this work in a language that is suitable for a broad readership.

Visit the APA Handbook of Psychopharmacology web page for more information, including the full table of contents and editor biographies.

PsycBOOKS users on APA PsycNET® (including subscribers to APA PsycNET Gold, Gold Plus, and Platinum), EBSCOhost, Ovid and ProQuest can access the entire series by browsing PsycBOOKS or by performing a title search for a particular handbook.

Institutions also have the option of purchasing handbooks individually. Print only, Electronic only, or Electronic + Print options are available through APA, with electronic access provided via the APA PsycNET® platform. For more information on pricing and availability, please see the APA Handbooks in Psychology institutional purchase page or contact us at quotes@apa.org.

Tutorial Thursday – Finding Preprint Articles in APA PsycNET

It’s Tutorial Thursday! In this series, we explore APA’s library of video tutorials available on the APA Publishing Training YouTube channel. Please feel free to link to or embed our videos in your library websites or LibGuides, course management systems, or other locations where students, faculty, and researchers will find them.

A new version of the tutorial How to Find Preprint Articles in APA PsycNET is available.

This short video starts with a brief description of preprint articles, including why they matter. Next, we’ll demonstrate how to access them and how to create an alert to stay current on upcoming preprints in your research area.

By the end of this video you will be able to:

  • Recognize the value of preprint articles.
  • Identify several ways preprint articles are referred to by databases and publishers.
  • Access preprint articles in APA PsycNET.
  • Create an alert in APA PsycNET to access forthcoming preprint articles.

From the Deck of… ACRL 2019 Lunch & Learn

Welcome to “From the Deck of . . .” an irregular series in which we highlight search demos and other information from the slide decks we create for our live training sessions. You can view and download these materials from the APA Publishing Training SlideShare account.

At the ACRL meeting this month, we presented a Lunch & Learn training session covering updates and search tips for APA’s databases.

The presentation covered the recent thesaurus update, upcoming changes to the PsycTESTS database, and features of the My PsycNET platform manager.

Live demos included the following example searches:

  • using thesaurus terms
  • updating a saved search with the new thesaurus terms
  • using PsycINFO’s tests & measures field to find a known test
  • searching for appended tests
  • PsycTESTS example search

You can review the slides from our ACRL 2019 Lunch & Learn on our SlideShare account.
