It’s Tutorial Thursday! In this series, we explore APA’s library of video tutorials available on the APA Publishing Training YouTube channel. Please feel free to link to or embed our videos in your library websites or LibGuides, course management systems, or other locations where students, faculty, and researchers will find them.

A new version of the tutorial Peer-Reviewed Empirical Articles is available.

The first short video will prepare you to find empirical studies from peer-reviewed journals. We’ll start with explaining what an empirical study is what it means for a study to be published in a peer-reviewed journal.

The second short video demonstrates how to quickly and easily find these types of journal articles using the filters in PsycINFO.

By the end of this 2-part tutorial you will be able to:

• Explain what it means for an article to be considered an empirical study.
• Describe the process that an article goes through to be published in a peer-reviewed journal.
• Use the filters in PsycInfo to access empirical studies from peer-reviewed journals.
• Determine if an article found in PsycInfo is an empirical study from a peer-reviewed journal.

The APA Handbooks in Psychology series was launched in 2011 to provide comprehensive overviews and in-depth study of specific subfields within psychology. All of the Handbooks are included in the PsycBOOKS® database, and titles are also available individually.

The first short video prepares you to be able to use the APA Thesaurus in order to search for relevant articles that will answer your research question. We’ll start by discussing the value of using the APA Thesaurus. Then, we’ll explain how to identify search terms from your research question that you use use when searching the Thesaurus.

The second short video shows how to identify Index Terms in the APA Thesaurus and use these Index terms to create a tailored search.
