New Handbook: The APA Handbook of Trauma Psychology

The APA Handbooks in Psychology series was launched in 2011 to provide comprehensive overviews and in-depth study of specific subfields within psychology. All of the Handbooks are included in the PsycBOOKS® database, and titles are also available individually.

The series currently contains 24 authoritative titles, including the 2014 CHOICE Outstanding Academic Title, APA Handbook of Sexuality and Psychology.

The most recent addition to the series, the APA Handbook of Trauma Psychology, was published in April 2017. It provides a survey of all the major areas and subtopics of empirical knowledge and practical applications in the field of trauma psychology, written by top experts in the field.

Volume 1 is divided into sections on the nature of trauma, its psychological impact, major conceptual frameworks for understanding traumatization, and trauma as viewed from the diverse perspective of various disciplines.

Volume 2 covers various applications of trauma psychology, including various modalities of trauma assessment, major treatment approaches across the lifespan, and multi-client and organizational practice.

For more information, including a full table of contents, please visit the APA website.

PsycBOOKS users on APA PsycNET® (including subscribers to APA PsycNET Gold, Gold Plus, and Platinum), EBSCOhost, Ovid and ProQuest can access the entire series by browsing PsycBOOKS or by performing a title search for a particular handbook.

Institutions also have the option of purchasing handbooks individually. Print only, Electronic only, or Electronic + Print options are available through APA, with electronic access provided via the APA PsycNET® platform. For more information on pricing and availability, please see the APA website or contact us at quotes@apa.org.

Tutorial Thursday – Using the APA Thesaurus When Searching PsycINFO

It’s Tutorial Thursday! In this series, we explore APA’s library of video tutorials available on the PsycINFO YouTube channel and the APA Style CENTRAL® YouTube channel. Please feel free to link to or embed our videos in your library websites or LibGuides, course management systems, or other locations where students, faculty, and researchers will find them.

Searching “All fields” or “keywords” in a database such as PsycINFO® is a simple way to get started with research. Using the indexed subject headings found in APA’s Thesaurus is a more effective way to hone in on the resources you need.

A new version of the tutorial for using the APA Thesaurus on ProQuest is now available. This three minute video has demo searches that show how using the Thesaurus’ subject headings helps you research PsycINFO with depth and efficiency.

PsycTESTS – Finding Other Versions

Some frequently used tests appear in multiple versions within the scholarly literature and the PsycTESTS® database. You may see versions that have been revised or updated, shortened or abridged, modified for different age groups or populations, translated into new languages, and more. In PsycTESTS records, the Other Versions field links to and describes alternate forms of the test that are included in PsycTESTS. If you’ve found a test you’d like to use or cite, it’s a good idea to quickly check the Other Versions field to make sure you’re using the best version for your research.
