APA PsycInfo: Beginner Search

This 45 minute session is for anyone who is new to searching the behavioral sciences literature.

APA trainers demonstrate simple yet powerful techniques including how to quickly identify the best search terms, apply filters to narrow the range of results, and pinpoint empirical studies.

Highlights include: using APA Thesaurus terms and other database fields to target your search, Boolean operators to accurately include or exclude concepts, and cited references to find related research.

APA PsycInfo: Advanced Search

This 45-minute session highlights some of APA PsycInfo’s advanced functionality, designed to increase your efficiency by retrieving better search results faster.

We provide an overview of the three main vocabularies [keywords, APA Thesaurus subjects, and Classifications] that you can use to search APA PsycInfo, and show easy yet effective ways to quickly expand or narrow your list of search results.

You’ll also learn how to find important information about tests and measures and how to uncover details about grants and sponsorships that can reveal potential funding opportunities.

Semester Special: APA PsycInfo research services

Join us for the first ever “Semester Special,” a deeper dive into one area of APA’s research tools and databases. The topic for Spring 2023 is APA PsycInfo research services.

Leveraging AI and machine learning, these services ease access to full text, analytics tools, and discovery of the latest scientific literature—all within the most trusted index of psychological science in the world. New Thesaurus Terms for Searching APA PsycInfo (Fall 2022)

In October, APA added 25 new terms to its Thesaurus of Psychological Index Terms® to provide more effective searching on current topics, including cannabis use, socioeconomic status, and health problems related to alcohol use. This Thesaurus update also includes 50 new cross-referenced terms, 147 revised scope notes, and additional edits to historical notes.
Examples of new Postable terms include Alcohol Induced Psychotic Disorders, Dihydroxyphenylalanine, Incarcerated, Low Vision, Research Psychologists, and Thought Disorders. Use the link at the end of the post to view the full list of Thesaurus change on the APA website.

Using the controlled vocabulary of the Thesaurus means a database search will quickly and accurately retrieve all publications related to a specific concept, regardless of the keywords the authors may have used.

Perhaps you need a memory refresh for the statistical term “P factor analysis”? Maybe you’re curious to know what the acronym “SSRI” stands for, or the different types of conditions for which SSRIs are commonly used?

Faster than digging into an e-textbook and more reliable than a Google search, the online version of the APA Dictionary of Psychology® puts at your fingertips more than 25,000 authoritative entries spanning 90 subfields. Freely available on the APA web site, you can quickly access the APA dictionary to look up a specific psychology term or browse the headwords.

New Videos Added to APA PsycTherapy (Fall 2022)

In September, we added 10 new videos to APA PsycTherapy®, our streaming video database designed to meet the teaching and training needs of psychotherapy students and practitioners. APA PsycTherapy videos are recorded during an unscripted online session to provide an authentic example of psychotherapy conducted by an expert therapist.

The 10 newest videos are excellent examples of working with clients/patients remotely through video conferencing. In addition, each new video is divided into meaningful segments for easier identification of teachable moments. (More than 200 older videos are also segmented into these annotated chapters).

Content in this latest update includes demonstrations of a four-session couple evaluation featuring Dr. Anthony Chambers of the Family Institute of Northwestern University; examples of positive psychotherapy with Dr. Tayyab Rashid; culturally responsive cognitive behavioral therapy with Dr. Erlanger Turner; and two examples of work with patients experiencing symptoms of long-haul COVID-19 with Dr. Anne C. Dobmeyer, an active-duty officer in the United States Public Health Service.
