Meet Helen Hough, MLS, APA’s 2015 Recipient of the APA Excellence in Librarianship Award

“I recommend to anybody—if you see a hole that could be filled—do it,” says Helen Hough, Systems Librarian for Open Source Applications, University of Texas at Arlington, and recipient of the 2015 APA Award for Excellence in Librarianship. That neatly sums up her approach to life and work, and most particularly, to her development of the Tests and Measures in the Social Sciences: Tests Available in Compilation Volumes database (TMdb).

For the few of you who may not have encountered it, the TMdb indexes tests and measures that have been published in books. Years ago, Helen found many of the students she worked with struggling as they tried to find tests they needed for research. To help them, she began going through books with tests on her own, indexing the location, and posting the information for them on the Internet. Once it was on the web, other librarians and students, similarly frustrated, found it and began to make use of it themselves. Continue reading →

Conference Travel Awards for Librarians

By now you’ve read about Helen Hough, the recipient of the 2015 Award for Excellence in Librarianship. Coming up on the 10th year of this award, we took stock of the program and decided it was a good time to refocus our efforts. As a result, the 2015 award will mark the end of the Excellence in Librarianship award program, and we’ve been working to establish a new program that will enable APA to affect your professional development in a totally new way.

The APA Library Conference Travel Award will support early and mid-career librarians who are seeking to attend select library conferences in order to grow as professionals. For most conferences, preference will be given to those whose regular job responsibilities include working closely with students, faculty, clinicians and researchers in the behavioral sciences. Application criteria and deadlines will be available in the coming weeks.

FAQ: PsycARTICLES & PsycINFO

One of our most frequently asked questions is one of the simplest to answer. The question? Are all the journals in PsycARTICLES® also indexed in PsycINFO®?

The answer is yes! All of the PsycARTICLES records are also in PsycINFO. That includes APA journals back to the first issue of publication (except for Rehabilitation Psychology, for which we begin coverage in 1972 at Volume 19), as well as records for the APA Educational Publishing Foundation, the Canadian Psychological Association, and Hogrefe Publishing Group, which also go back to the first issue in most cases.

Not only will you find the PsycARTICLES records in PsycINFO, you’ll also find records for all the content in PsycBOOKS® and PsycCRITIQUES®.
