We recently presented our Lunch & Learn training session at the American Library Association Annual Conference & Exhibition. One of the items we covered in this session was a review of working with cited references in PsycINFO® on all of the major vendor platforms: APA PsycNET®, EBSCOhost, Ovid, and ProQuest.

Being able to successfully navigate cited references data allows you to identify where a particular piece of research fits into the larger research continuum. You can see what led to that research, and how it influenced the research that followed. It’s also a great way to help a student who’s brainstorming dissertation topics, or a researcher looking for a new area to explore. Continue reading →

APA Librarian Conference Travel Award: Reflections on ALA Annual 2016

The most recent recipient of the APA Librarian Conference Travel Award, Callie Wiygul Branstiter from the University of Southern California – Los Angeles, used the award to defray the cost of attendance at the American Library Association Annual Conference & Exhibition in June. New Handbook: The APA Handbook of Clinical Psychology

The APA Handbooks in Psychology series was launched in 2011 to provide comprehensive overviews and in-depth study of specific subfields within psychology. All of the Handbooks are included in the PsycBOOKS® database, and titles are also available individually.

The series currently contains 20 authoritative titles, including the 2014 CHOICE Outstanding Academic Title, APA Handbook of Sexuality and Psychology.

This five-volume set reflects the state-of-the-art in clinical psychology — science, practice, research, and training. In June 2016, APA added 11 new APA books to PsycBOOKS®. Past monthly update lists are available online. You can also view a list of sample titles or a full coverage list.

Bibliographic records are available through your PsycBOOKS vendor. You may also download RDA records directly from APA by following the instructions in the APA PsycNET® Administrator Help Menu.

Now Available! APA Style CENTRAL

By now, you may have heard about the newest member of the APA Style® family: APA Style CENTRAL®.

APA Style CENTRAL is an authoritative resource developed by our Style Experts. It is a suite of services and tools designed to ease the pain points encountered by students, instructors and librarians in teaching, learning, and writing in APA Style.

A screenshot of the APA Style CENTRAL homepage APA Style CENTRAL incorporates learning objects, such as video tutorials and sample references, which instructors and librarians can use to support student learning anytime, anywhere. It contains a variety of tools geared at helping students learn about, and manage, the process of conducting research. These include a collection of APA reference books on quantitative and qualitative research, and a feature that takes the user, step by step, through the process of developing and scoping a research question.

Students and other users can easily save and create properly formatted APA Style references, and then use them to write a paper in the online editor. The online editor handles paper formatting (such as the margins and running head), and makes inserting in-text references a snap.

Users will find contextual help and cues embedded throughout APA Style CENTRAL, including links back to related video tutorials, and excerpts from the 6th edition of the Publication Manual.
