New Handbook: APA Handbook of Dementia

The APA Handbooks in Psychology series was launched in 2011 to provide comprehensive overviews and in-depth study of specific subfields within psychology. All 28 of the Handbooks are included in the PsycBOOKS® database, and titles are also available individually.

The most recent addition to this series is the APA Handbook of Dementia, edited by Glenn E. Smith and published in May 2018.

This handbook addresses assessment, comorbidity, evaluation, and treatment of various forms of dementia, and reviews common dementias including Alzheimer’s disease, Lewy body disease, vascular dementia, frontotemporal dementia, and other less common dementias. It is organized into sections discussing diagnosis, epidemiology, and neurobiology (including neuropathology and neuroimaging); assessment, including cultural issues, methodology, and neuropsychology; and primary, secondary, and tertiary intervention strategies.

The handbook is intended as a resource for all psychologists and other health professionals that serve persons and families impacted by neurodegenerative disease.

Interactive Site for New APA Style Journal Article Reporting Standards

The APA Style Journal Article Reporting Standards (APA Style JARS) provide researchers in psychology with a structured guide to communicate important aspects of their research. Created by psychologists, the standards aim to enhance the quality of published research by promoting transparency and facilitating the assessment of rigor.

In January 2018, APA released an update to the standards, which now include guidance on reporting qualitative and mixed methods research as well as revised guidelines for quantitative research.

In early May, APA launched a brand-new companion website for APA Style JARS that provides tools for students, authors, reviewers, and editors, including:

  • the latest news and frequently asked questions
  • checklists to facilitate the reporting process
  • an informational video
  • training and tutorials

This companion site will help students, researchers, and educators throughout the research process, enabling authors to more thoroughly and accurately communicate their research, increasing opportunities for funding, collaboration, and replication. In addition, the website should make it easier for researchers to publish in APA journals, which in turn provides readers with information that is more accessible and easily understood.

APA Style CENTRAL® Update: Improved Searching of Learning Center Content

The search function in the Learning Center has been improved! APA Style CENTRAL recently added features and updated tools to help with your research and writing in APA Style (also see our previous blog posts for details about spell-check and appendices and citing within paper elements).

After discovering that users were not easily finding relevant quick guides, sample references, and other content when searching the Learning Center, we updated the behind-the-scenes indexing for the learning objects to make them easier to find.

You can now enter a variety of search terms without having to exactly match the terms used in the learning object’s description or title. All of the relevant parts of the search results are highlighted in yellow. If the answer can be found in both the learning object and an associated PDF in the LEARN MORE section, both will be highlighted.

For example: Searching for “chapter” results in highlighting of the quick guide title “Book Chapter Reference”; all instances of the word “chapter” in this quick guide’s DESCRIPTION heading; the video preview box in the THUMBNAIL section; and the text in the LEARN MORE section, “APA Style Guide to Electronic References, Examples 19-20″.

""

Another notable example: Searching for “Bible” will display the “Citing References in Text” quick guide, with highlighting of the relevant section of the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association that addresses the citation of classical works.

Let us know! If you search the Learning Center but don’t find what you’re looking for, please email us! Tell us what search term(s) you used and what you expected to find so that we can update the content indexing to improve the search functionality.

Search tip: To quickly clear your search terms from the search box or view all learning objects again, use the “Show all items” link to the left of the search box (see screenshot above).
